FIRST Lego League with Fourth Grade!

FIRST (For Inspiration and recognition of Science and Technology )Lego League (FLL) is a National competition is a program that supports students in order to introduce them to science and technology in a sporty atmosphere.
The objective is to:
  1. make kids enthusiastic about science and technology
  2. to equip the participants with the idea of team spirit
  3. to encourage children and youngsters to solve complex tasks in a creative way
The basis of FLL is a robotics tournament in a cheerful atmosphere, where kids and youngsters need to solve a tricky “mission” with the help of a robot. The kids are researching a given topic within a team, they are planning programming and testing an autonomous robot to solve the mission. The FLL Teams take the opportunity to experience all steps of a real product development process: solving a problem under time pressure with insufficient resources and unknown competitors. FLL is a small microcosmos of real business life in all its respects. This year the topic is all about Architecture! My favorite subject. We are examining real world problems and exploring possible solutions. We'll keep you posted on our team progress!

Third Grade Idea Lab Revisiting Culture as they Journey to Australia

Third Grade Idea Lab created flags that represented who they are. If you were going to create a flag that symbolized your values and beliefs, what would it look lie? Check out these creative culture flags. Third graders have some pretty special core values!

We also leaned about pie graphs and made our own creative twist on pie graphs that represent how much land mass each continent covers. Check out the continent rose graph and continent golf ball graph! (:

As we dive into our continent study we are heading to Australia and learning how to use Atlas' to find location using latitude and longitude. Even though Google maps is super handy, a good old fashioned Atlas can really help you understand your place on the Earth!

We are starting our animal research but had a little fun learning about the Sydney Opera House as well. Check out the cool paper model we made...

Second Grade Idea Lab Taking a Trip Down Under!

Second grade Idea Lab has been busy learning about culture, examining their own culture and diving into our first continent of study, Australia!  We learned the difference between physical and political maps and did some research about the island continent of Australia! It was fun revisiting what we learned about islands from first grade.

What's Happening in First Grade Idea Lab!

Can you believe we are wrapping up our first three weeks of First Grade Idea Lab? Are you curious about what we've been up to? Learning about perseverance from Grandfather Tang’s Story! These kiddos never gave up even when they were working through the most challenging Tangram puzzles!

This past week we discussed ways we could use Tangrams to create our own stories. We also talked about ways we could be descriptive and creative in our storytelling. I can't wait to see all the wonderful ideas these kiddos come up with!
