Fourth Grade Idea Lab students Dive into Architecture!

  • Using model magic and toothpicks, students built a Greek temple that mimics the Greeks admiration for geometry, structure and design.
  • Students built Roman aqueducts using K'Nex to mimic the Roman bridge design.
  • They also drew structural forms such as a doric, ionic, and corinthian columns, domes, buttresses, barrel vaults, and pediments and then located them on famous structures around the world.
  • They also researched about the Great Wall of China and answered a series of questions about its construction. Then, using recycled materials and graph paper, students created a scale model of the wall.

Congratulations to OB's FLL Teams!

Fourth grade students competed in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) this past weekend at Brittany Woods Middle School in University City.

Team - The Starlings
Problem they examined: If small parts break on the exercise equipment the crew needs a quick and efficient way to replace that part
 Core Values Award

Team  - The Solar Psychos
Problem they examined: The problem we explored was how long-duration space travel missions can affect mental stability.  Astronauts sometimes face mental complications in space, especially as missions increase in length and complexity.

Fourth Graders Building Missions for the 2018 FLL Season

We are so excited to start the First Lego League challenge in Idea Lab. This year the theme is space! If you have a job related to space travel or study and you want to help our team, email Mrs. MacLean at tmaclean@ladueschools.net. Our job is to

  • Identify a physical or social problem faced by humans during long duration space exploration
  • Design a way to solve your problem
  • Share your problem and solution with others Sending people into space is one of the hardest challenges humans face. Rockets are complex and dangerous, and space is an unforgiving place. Space explorers face the physical problems of just staying alive, and if they are away from Earth for years at a time, they may also face social problems as well.

Third Grade Idea Lab is Going Lunar!

Team Lunar-tics having a little fun before they start their moon research today. What do you do when one of your classmates gets sucked into another dimension? You use one of the most important Lego Core Values to help out a friend in need, teamwork!

Farewell to My Fourth Graders!

I am going to miss my fourth graders! Best of Luck next year at the Fifth Grade Center!

The European Cafe! Third graders have taken a fun journey around the world and we ended our world tour in Europe. We invited parents in to see the amazing presentations that students put together. We learned research skills, map skills, presentation skills and all about a variety of cultures. The students also made fun souvenirs to hand out to their classmates.

Sea Creature Myths!

First graders learned about sea creature and mythical stories. We create our own very own sea creature book! We wrote and illustrated our own stories and published the final product. Here we are enjoying the beautiful weather, reading each other’s stories and signing autographs.

Fourth Grade Architecture Students

Fourth grade architecture students were tourists in their own town this week. They applied the knowledge they learned about ancient styles to the buildings in our city. It was a great learning experience. We started at the Landmark's Association of St. Louis and spent some time learning about the different materials used to build buildings. Then we went on a walking tour of the city. Our final stop was at the Cathedral Basilica where we observed the beautiful architecture and mosaic tile work.

Great job to all the teams that participated and congratulations to the team We=MC Squared for winning an award for the Most Creative Team Name.

Learning about Latitude and Longitude

Second and third grade Idea Lab students are learning about longitude and latitude. They put together this giant map and walked the longitude and latitude lines to find A variety of European countries. Each student is researching and learning about a specific country. Stay tuned for pictures from our European Cafe. We will transform our classroom into a European Cafe and invite parents to join as as they relax and learn all about Europe.
