SECOND-GRADE IDEA LAB
In
second and third-grade Idea Lab, students are on a two-year journey “around the
world.” They will discover the geography, flora and fauna, countries,
indigenous people, and cultures of our world as well as discuss important
issues like global climate change, pollution, hunger, and the use of natural
resources. The goal is to begin to
prepare them to be knowledgeable citizens of the world and to give them an
appreciation of the way other people live. In the course of two years, the students will visit the six most
inhabited continents with a flyover of Antarctica. There is a specific focus or
big idea for each continent. In addition
to the study of the world, students are presented with a variety of problem-solving activities including logic puzzles, visual and verbal analogies, design
projects, and creative activities. The
curriculum is designed to be intellectually challenging, open-ended, and student-centered.
